Jason - Backspacing is the distance from the outermost edge of the backside
of the rim (wheel) to the inside surface that actually gets bolted to the
axle/spindle. There is an excellent cross section of this description on the
"Mickey Thompson" website (see below), so you can see what I'm talking
about.
