My Wife and I went a similar route on our recent Honeymoon. We drove
Highway 5 from LA to San Francisco, and then 101 through Oregon and up into
Washington. We then took ferries to the San Juan Islands, to Vancouver
Island, and from Vancouver Island a ferry to Prince Rupert Canada. From
there, a sea plane to Ketchikan Alaska. We carried passports with us, but I
believe a drivers license will suffice. Just remember, everything up there
is on the metric system, so when the speed limit is 110, remember it is km/h
NOT mp/h ;0)

Have fun!!! It is a beautiful drive!!!

Subject: DML: Long trip in the Dakota-Canada questions

I'll be making the long trip from Central California all
the way up through Canada to a friends place in Anchorage
Alaska, about 3000 mi each way. I'll probably be doing
this in May or June. Since I've never driven across the
border, I have some questions for the Canadien DML'ers. Do
you need a passport to cross the border?? (don't think so,
but gotta ask) Also, I know you guys are a little funny
when it comes to firearms in your country. Am I going to
run into problems if I have a handgun and it's unloaded in
a locked container?? (are there any magazine capacity
limits?) What about rifles?

Should be a fun trip and nice to travel in comfort and
style (I'll have to get some tires with a more mild tread,
I'll go nuts listening to the Swampers hummm for 3 or 4
days at a time)!! It'll be kind or weird to have to change
my oil before I leave my house, again when I get to Alaska
and again when I get back home.

Anybody else done this same trip? Any hints?
