That's easy:

Grab a 10-Speed and put it on some wet pavement. Now select 1st gear and
slowly move the pedals. Very easy to get moving. Now select 2nd or 3rd
gear and do the same. It requires more power from your legs to get them
moving which, in turn, creates more of a chance that you apply too much
power and slip the wheel. You could compare this with 4.10:1 (1st gear)
and 3.90:1 / 3.55:1 (2nd / 3rd gear).
