They lied to you.

I have a 99 and I had a plain key cut that works 24/7 just fine. No chip, no
resistor, no problem.

Now the 2000 might be different but I doubt it. Those systems are expensive
and you hve to get the keys from an authorized dealer or a specialty
locksmith.
