If it squeals then it is the alternator. But check the tension on the belt
first.

Subject: DML: Belt noise?

I've got a '97 Dakota sport V-6 auto trans. When I first start it up in the
morning and put it in gear, the serpentine belt sort of jumps and jerks and
makes a coinciding noise. If I take it out of gear it's OK. When it warms up
it seems to be OK. It's got 41,000 miles on it. Does it sound like a belt
problem or something else?
