HEY DML'ERS,
SOMEONE WAS ASKING ABOUT TIRES AND I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I
WOULD SAY ON THE SUBJECT. MAYBE THIS'LL HELP SOMEONE WHO WANT'S TO WHEEL
THEIR DAKOTA--OR ANY TRUCK FOR THAT MATTER.
HEY DAVE,
HAVE YOU GOT NEW TIRES YET? IF NOT I HAVE SOME ADVICE. I HAVE AN
87 DAKOTA AND 4WHEEL WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS 4X CLUB HERE IN FORT
COLLINS, COLORADO. SO I'VE HAD OR SEEN MOST OF THE TIRES YOU'RE
ASKING ABOUT.
THE BFG'S? A REALLY GOOD TIRE, BUILT STRONG AND WITH A HARD RUBBER
COMPOUND. THEY LAST FOREVER. IF YOU PLAN ON ANY FOUR WHEELING I'D
STAY OFF THE AT'S. I HAD MUDS AND LIKED THEM ALOT. THE LAST SNOW
BASHING TRIP I WENT ON--ABOUT 10,000 FT ASL--I SPENT THE WHOLE DAY
PULLING OR PUSHING THESE TWO JEEPS ON AT'S. THEY CLOG UP AND YOUR
DONE FOR. THE MT'S, THOUGH, ARE AN EXCELLENT TIRE. BFG IS THE MOST
EXSPENSIVE TIRE. BUT WELL WORTH IT.
MY FRIEND AND FELLOW CLUB MEMBER RAN DICK CEPECK MT'S ON HIS TRUCK
FOR A LONG TIME. JUST AS GOOD AS THE BFG'S, JUST A SOFTER RUBBER.
DON'T LAST AS LONG. HE COMPETED ON THEM AND THEY DID FINE. ALSO A
GOOD TIRE. LESS EXSPENSIVE THAN A BFG. HE TRADED HIS FOR SWAMPERS.
I HAD SWAMPERS ,TOO, FOR A WHILE. MATTER OF FACT THE SWAMPER IS THE
MOST POPULAR TIRE IN OUR CLUB. IT'S BUILT TOUGH--4 PLIES ON THE
SIDEWALL ALONE! IT WILL GO ANY WHERE--UNLESS YOU BURY THE TRUCK IN
MUD, WHICH I'VE DONE. NEVER WHEEL ALONE FOR THAT REASON. STAY
AWAY FROM THE 32X9.50'S. MINE I HAD REPLACED ONCE AND THEY DID THE
SAME THING AGAIN. NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN A SWAMPER DO WHAT MINE DID.
THE TREAD BLOCKS SPLIT FROM THE TIRE AND CAME OFF. NOT COOL. BUT
LIKE I SAID, WE BELIEVE THAT TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THAT SIZE. WHEN I
BUILD MORE LIFT IN MY TRUCK I'LL GET SWAMPERS AGAIN. THE THING WITH
SWAMPERS IS THAT ON ROAD THEY SUCK. BRAKING, ACCELERATING, TURNING,
CRUISING ALL SUFFER. AND THEY ARE LOUD! HEARING LOSS LOUD. THAT
AND THEY ARE BUILT OUT OF A REALLY SOFT RUBBER--THEY DON'T LAST LONG
ON ROAD, BUT MAN YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM OFF ROAD! GOOD TIRE NOT TOO
MUCH MONEY FOR WHAT THEY WILL DO. BUT A SECOND SET OF WHEELS AND
TIRES FOR ON ROAD USAGE IS ADVISABLE.
I REPLACED MY SWAMPERS WITH A SET OF MICKEY THOMPSON MTX'S. SO FAR
I REALLY LIKE THEM. AND THEY WERE LESS EXSPENSIVE THAN A SET OF
BFG'S, CONTRARY TO POPULAR ASSUMPTION. THEY HANDLE REALLY WELL ON
THE ROAD AND HVE DONE REALLY WELL IN THE SNOW. I JUST GOT THEM
THREE WEEKS AGO AND HAVE YET TO TEST THE OFFROAD CHARACTERISTICS.
BUT THE TREAD IS AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH. THEY ARE BUILT LIKE SWAMPERS,
MULTIPLE PLIES, BUT WITH A HARDER RUBBER. SO FAR I LIKE THEM ALOT.
GOOD TIRE, GOOD PRICE. ( ADDITION TODAY DUMPED ALOT OF SNOW ON US AND MY
MICKEYS ARE DOING JUST FINE.)
THE BADYEAR--I MEAN GOODYEARS? I WOULDN'T. NO ONE IN THE CLUB
WHO'S HAD THEM LIKES THEM. WORD FROM ALL THE COMPETITIONS IS THEY
DON'T DO AS WELL AS A SWAMPER OR BFG--NO MATTER WHAT THE MAGAZINES
ARE PAID TO SAY. NOT ENOUGH BANG FOR TOO MUCH MONEY.
AS FOR WHERE TO BUY? IF YOU HAVE A DISCOUNT TIRE IN YOUR AREA USE
THEM. YOU CANNOT FIND BETTER SERVICE. BFG'S, SWAMPERS, OR MICKEYS
ARE WHERE I'LL PUT MY MONEY. THAT IN A NUT SHELL IS MY TWO CENTS.
A BIG NUTSHELL. HOPE THIS GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO GO ON.
