The skin is gapped about 1/4 to 1/2 on the wings and some parts of the body.
When on the runway, the fire trucks were there to wash off the fuel on the
runway when the plane left. Then in flight, when flying above Mach 3
(actually it will fly above Mach 4 range) the Titanium metal would heat up
and closed the gaps.

he SR 71 also when in flight became about 1 foot longer. I talked to a
bunch of pilots and they said something happens at those speeds and the
thing stretches like taffy
