In the last week or so someone was asking about the differences in
hitches. I came across this info at
http://www.trucksnstuff.com/hitch.htm

Class Max. Gross Towing Weight Tongue Weight
I 2,000 lbs 200 lbs
II 3,500 lbs 300 lbs
III 3,500 - 5,000 300 - 500 lbs
IV 5,000 - 12,000 500 - 1,200 lbs

Remember to check what your truck is equipped/rated to haul in addition
to what the hitch can handle. Your truck's max. towing limit will be
effected by the weight of/in the truck (load and optional equipment).
The '00 Dakota sales pamphlet I have notes load-equalizing hitches are
recommended for trailers over 2,000 lbs.
