Jim,
Welcome!
My 5.2L had very similar symptoms with about 13,xxx mile on it. Dealer
ended up replacing the fuel pump (no check engine light either)! Not sure
if the 4.7 is similar but at least it gives something else to consider!

Welcome to the list Jim, you should try and make it to the picnic on
March 18th. I hear there will be about 50 Daks out there (just had to
throw that in there to scare the VA folks!)
Anyway about your
problem, mine did the EXACT same thing to me for several months. I
replaced just about every sensor I could except for the Oxygen sensor.
That's what it was. I had just installed a new sensor but it was
bad. I would start it, it would idle fine for a few seconds, then
get REAL bad and almost die, and then just like someone flipped a
switch it would shoot up to 800 - 1000 rpms and settle in to a nice
normal idle. If I tried to drive it while it was having this episode
it would backfire on me. Oh, and my computer never gave any trouble
codes. Mine's a '93 model which is pre-OBDII but the symptoms are
identical. Who knows, maybe you too have a bad-but-new oxygen
sensor. Something for you to check anyway.
