Dave,
If you don't want to lose half your coolant out the t-stat opening, then yes,
drain about half of it out! Easy to do, just yank down on the splash guard on
driver's side to get 2 snaps off, you'll see the petcock with a little rubber
hose on it. I wedged a small funnel in by the splash guard & directed the
drain hose into it, then drained about a gallon out. Then use a 13mm short
socket with a 6" extension to remove the t-stat housing while leaving the rad
hose connected to it. Don't worry about air getting in, it's not like it's a
brake system. Air will get in that big hole where the t-stat sits when you
change it, right? Full info is on my page.
