On my '99 V8 there's the rubber baffle behind the grill, but that's
about it. The intake tube that leads into the stock airbox "opens" into
the fender, buried (see pix of my QuickD upgrade). If you remove that
tube, you'd probably get less restricted airflow into the airbox.

If you're really concerned about airflow (and it sounds like you are),
dump the stock airbox altogether and get a QuickD or similar intake
system.
