How do I get trouble codes from a 99 Dak?

I've tried the three and five time on-off sequence, as well as holding down
the Trip Odometer button five seconds after I turn the key on. The latter
will go through and test all the dash lights and gagues but does not return
any codes.

Is it possible that when the check engine light is on and there is a
noticeable problem that there are no codes stored?

Please help me get these codes!
