Here's how I buy vehicles (I'm on my 6th Dakota, and it's worked from #2 on
up including
a Toyota dealership for Corolla I bought in '96):

Ask for the fleet sales manager. Tell him what you want, and that if you
cannot get it for a fair price (typically $500 over invoice is a fair price
for them, vs. a salesman up front charging you anywhere from $1500-$3500
more).

If he doesn't want to deal, just plainly state this: "You can sell it to me
(or order it for me if you plan on ordering), make $500 over cost, plus
whatever
holdback you get at the end of the month/quarter... it won't sit on your lot
more
than a day, and you'll have a happy customer. If you don't want to, I can
go
down the street to Joe Blow Dodge Auto Group, and THEY'll do it. They'll
make
the $500 plus hold back, and then I'll drive it up to your dealership and
show
you my new car/truck." *The last sentence is optional, and I've only used
that one
once-- and it helped seal the deal.

If a dealership can get a guaranteed sale, on a specific date without
hassle, they'll
do it.

If someone asks why do you deserve to go through fleet, tell them that
you've been
screwed too many times on other car purchases, and you know what you want,
and what
you want to pay. Be prepared to bring you own financing... Fleet doesn't
want to
deal with that. Though on my last purchase, the dealership was able to
counter offer
on my existing car loan that I had a check in hand for, throught the same
bank, and
got me 1/2 percent less... Worked for me.

If you plan on buying a truck, and are near Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego,
LA... I'll
come haggle for ya for a fee... :O) I use to pick up and deliver cars for a
VW dealership
years ago (deliver-- as in Drive the Far-Fig-Neuton out of those cars... The
only newer
VW that won't go over 100 mph is the Vanagon (rear eng, air cooled)..85 mph
MAX) and I had
to deal with a lot of stupid stuff with car dealerships.

I think lawyers and car salesman are twins seperated at birth...
