Dennis,
You may want to clarify this a little more. If you live in a state where
salt is used highly, you may want to go with the stainless if it is true 300
series. You are correct in stating that when welding 300 steel it increased
the chance for rust, but not if the welds are done correctly. If you live in
a state where salt is not used or a concern then I would go with the
Aluminized, because it is less expensive and will have approximately the
same life span as the stainless.
Just my two cents.

Subject: DML: STAINLESS VS. ALUMINIZED EXHAUST -- LONGISH
Aluminized is better than stainless because of the following reasons --
- Stainless pipes are made from 300 series steel (rust
resistant) BUT the weld line on the pipe and the welds that the shop will do
now make the steel 400 series steel which can now rust -- GO
FIGURE!!!!!
- Aluminized on the other hand is more rust resistant due to
the fact that the aluminum coating attracts the "rust" (to long to explain)
so no matter if it is welded or scratched the aluminum
coating works to attract the corrosion. Aluminum and magnesium are excellent
ways to prevent rust. This is why they put magnesium blocks on ships hulls
-- the magnesium rusts not the ship hull.
