Nobody woulda thunk it because it's not true. The Smokey Mountains
originally got their name because of the haze caused by the moisture in the
air. The "smoke" that visitors see today is caused by pollution from
factories in the northeast. This pollution works its way down to the Smokys
and not only spoils the view but is killing trees and wildlife too. I don't
know where you got your information, but the pollution of the Smokey
Mountains has been very well documented and is posted for all to see in the
park's visitors center as well as at observation points throughout the park.
