The reverse gear is not turning in the opposite direction. The reverse gear is
on the same (main)shaft as the forward gears. When you put the tranny in
reverse, the reverse gear on the mainshaft meshes with an idler gear that is
meshed with the output shaft. That idler gear is what makes it turn in the
opposite direction. It's a straight cut gear, that's why it makes so much noise
when you drive in reverse. Fully syncronized trannies have first and reverse
using the same gear. Non-synchronized trannies use a seperate gear for reverse.
Since your not going very fast in reverse, and not used as often as the forward
gears, it would be a waste of money to synchronize the gear, but it is possible.
