Richard, yeah... I had the same thoughts. General consensus on the list has
been that ignition system upgrades (Jacobs, MSD, etc.) make nice compliments
to other mods, but in themselves do not provide any significant gains.
Someone did relatively controlled tests with the MSD 6 series last year. MPG
improved, idle smoothed out, no appreciable gains in ET's.
Ignition upgrades are kinda like exhaust upgrades, you need to do the whole
shebang to get the most out of it. ie: upgrading your coil/ignition box
won't do much if your wires can't handle the increased charge, likewise,
adding headers will yield better results if you also open up past the y-pipe
to take advantage of the increased flow.
Not too many single mods that can be done to provide significant increases
as stand alones
(this excludes SC, Turbo, Nitrous, etc). The Mopar SBEC's (when available)
probably provide the single best bang for the $$.
But hey, thats all just MHO.
