The 3.9L did have the 42RE as its tranny. This may have
changed for the newer models. If it did, then most likely
it's a 44RE (which is what my '97 5.2L has).

Pat Storey, owner/driver of the '97 hemi-Dakota,
told me that you can id if the tranny is derivation
of the A500 or A518 by looking at the tranny pan.
If the sides of the pan are straight (no bulge),
then it's an A-500 derivation ... if a side has
a slight outward bulge (for the dipstick) then
it's an A518 derivation.
