Could be your distributor, I experienced something similar to that just
yesterday in my 97. Was out playing in the mud and rain (Just got about an
inch of rain here for the first time in about 6 months) and I drove through
a friggin huge water hole and the truck stalled out and died. I'm used to
this, cuz I get water in the thing all the time.... usually it'll just mis
fire a couple times and go on. Well there must have been a whole lotta
water in there cuz I had hell getting it started, then had to keep it revved
to about 2500 rpm for 20 minutes to get enough of it out to go down the road
again. The whole time it was backfiring and missing, and then I started
hearing this popping noise coming out of it.... I guess it was arcing
because of all the water in it. Anyways, got all that cleared out by
running about 115 down the road for several miles. Dropped by the
dealership and hooked the DRB to it and it showed multi-cylinder misfire,
misfire on 1,2,3,5,6,8, and something about no start signal to PCM.
Anyways, that was prolly a whole lot more information than you needed......
point of the story is..... check out your distributor. :)
