Here is my original post, to clue those in what initiated me to start
cutting tonight:
"Currently, I have a Flowmaster 3 chamber muffler hooked up into
the stock exit pipe. I did cut off the 90 factory bend(after the axle area)
and welded on a 45 degree piece of pipe, with the Meg's tip. So instead of
the exhaust exiting behind the rear tire, it now exits at the corner of the
rear bumper. It does look sweet how it exits, but functionally it doesnt
work for my needs. I have to take the tip off whenever I go 4wheelin', just
to I dont crush it against the bumper on those steeper departure angles. I
did some 4wheelin' today, and made up my mind I am sick of messing with the
tip. I will take function over fashion any day. I am going to cut off the
45degree mandrel pipe I had put on and simply just use a 'turn-down' exhaust
tip from now on, so I dont have to mess with taking the tip on and off. I
may even just run without a tip."
Well I bolted on a cut-off-wheel(actually needed 2 of them) and fired up the
ole' Craftsman angle grinder. Off came the exhaust pipe(some of it atleast);
that stock exhaust pipe is some thick stuff!
To support the exit pipe, since I cut the pipe/hanger off which supported
the exit pipe before, I bought a multi-postion 360degree exhaust hanger at
Pep Boys for like $3. I drilled a hole in the frame, and bolted it up to the
shortened pipe. Overall, I shortened the exit pipe about 28 inches,
including the 10" or so for the Meg's Tip. No more shiny stainless steel
exhaust tip for this Dak!!.......nor do I have to worry about the exhaust
system getting crushed under the bumper at severe departure angles. I took
it around the block and for a quick run on the highway, and honestly I can
tell a difference in the 'get-up and go' power. I guess since the exhaust
fumes can get out faster now, it helps with power.
