Tim, I've noticed the same thing, we have had upper 90's here in VA and when
I run the AC in those conditions I have noticed the truck runs cooler!! I
guess because the electric fan kicks on. I am tempted to run the 1/4 mile
with the AC on???!!! I have seen some people do it and claim the computer
run in open loop with it on??? not sure?? I may experiment.

Subject: DML: want better gas milage for your 4.7?

Just an FYI, I just drove through downtown Phoenix in my '00 CC 4X4 with
the 4.7. I had the a/c on max and did a lot of traffic light sitting and
stop
and go traffic. It's 109 here today. The temp guage just sits at about 190
no
matter if I'm sitting or driving. I'm fairly impressed that this must be a
pretty good cooling system....

Looking at the '00 FSM it states that the 4.7L thermo is
closed below 195F. This may seem high, but read on.

BUT, it only blocks 50% of the flow to the radiator
when closed. I don't think many thermos work this
way which results in more accurate regulation
according to the FSM.

Anyway, it seems fairly obvious that one should be
careful modifying/replacing the 4.7L thermostat; at
least to the point of replacing it with one the functions
the same way, just at a lower temp.
