Dak's come from the factory with a 195-degree thermostat because that's the
optimal temp that DC has determined based on the PCM and the pgms it is
running. The optimal temp isn't just for performance. It also has to do
with minimizing emissions. The reason people go to a 180-degree t-stat is
due to performance equipment being installed, the most noted one is a
computer change that makes the engine run hotter. This would be like a Jet
Stage II or an MP HP PCM which recommends you run 180 and premium fuel.
Hope this helps.

So, let me get this straight. No one has noticed any change in HP, mileage,
or emmisions when changing to a 180 deg thermostat. Our Dakota's don't come
with a 180 stat. So why bother changing over to the 180? I'm doing a
complete service the last week of this month on my Dak, and don't see the
benefit of spending $10 on something that has no effect on my truck. Could
someone explain this to me please?
