I realize autos get worse mileage in general but it seems to me that folks with
the manual tranny have had pretty good success squeezing great mileage from the
4.7L when they want to but the auto doesn't respond as well.
In other words: the difference between hot-rodding it and taking it easy is not
as noticeable with an auto; especially around town. I think when trying to
accelorate slowly/efficiently with the auto you are also delaying the overdrive
lockup so the effort is somewhat traded off. And in town so much time is spent
below lock out speed and either accelorating or braking (wasting any mileage
gained).
Just a theory, but I'm 38 years old and until last year have never owned an
automatic. With my 2k 4.7L cc auto I just don't get that mileage 'squeezability'
that I've always gotten in a manual.
