Aaron,
Yes I do have/had a leak in my tcase. I think it is where the two halves of
the case itself are bolted together, as it is just sealed with RTV. What I
did was I took a wire brush attachment and put it on my Dewalt drill and
cleaned the surface around it. I then took some brake cleaner and sprayed it
all over this area. I then applied a bead of black RTV down the entire seam
where the 2 case halves meet and this helps to stop the leak for about 4-5
months. Anyways, the leak is very small and I am not going to drop the tcase
just to fix this leak. True, the tcase is an important part of the 4WD
system, but so far it is not leaking bad enough to warrant a tcase drop just
to fix this leak. If it does get to the point of leaking so bad I am afraid
I will burn it up, then yes I will replace it. However, when I recently
drained and replaced the fuild, I couldnt even tell it was low. It maybe
leaked 2-3 ounces from last Fall 99' when I last did the RTV thing. Not sure
why you have the wet spot above the tcase though. Make sure all of the
'sensors' are sealed good ontop, as I think there is a speed sensor or a
vacuum sensor ontop which the o-ring and seal is prone to leaks on
Wranglers. Since we do have NP231 tcases, most good driveline shops know
alot about these and should be able to give you an estimate for repair if
you decide it needs to be fixed. I would just check you ATF level once a
month. A 30MM open/closed wrench is required for the drain/fill plugs. Good
Luck, hope this helps somewhat.........
