Yeah, Utica to Rt. 12 is a little shorter, if you don't mind going
through West Podunk. Unfortunately, from where you're at, there is NO
easy way to Watertown. For me, it's a straight shot up 481 to 81. I
almost suggested a more northerly route, but that would be well out of
the way, not to mention the fact that there are no interstates across
the north country.

Lake effect works in the summer AND winter. If you think that rain was
bad, you should try the snow they get! I-81 gets closed at least once
every winter due to the lake effect snow (but they didn't this year, I
think). That's why Rt. 11 parallels it all the way to Watertown - they
just divert people that way. I almost took that myself on Sunday.

I will leave the obvious sexual jokes unwritten :). Hopefully you can
make it to the next ride! I was thinking about trying to find a place
more to the east in New York for something either this fall or next
spring. Maybe there's some offroading near Lebanon Valley - there's a
drag strip there, so we can satisfy those with the need for speed AND
those who prefer to take it slow and off road.
