   True and false with the combination of a larger radiator, High flow water pump, Better fan(s),Tranny cooler(auto's only) and maximizing the open space in the engine compartment it is very possible to keep an engine from opening even a 160F thermo. as long as you keep a good amount of unrestricted air flow over the engine/radiator.(30-70 mph)for example I am running a 160F thermo. a 19' flex fan, a three row radiator, and a tranny cooler big enough for an RV And when I have water in my radiator(It leaks Like a sive becuase of a freeze plug on the back of the engine which will be taken care of during rebuild) I get a code 17 or was it 71 anyhow it stands for engine being too cold too long. hope that answer your question.
