Dave,
Maybe you missed all my posts over the last month concerning that fact that
I had NO 4WD; 4HI or 4LO. I would pull the tcase lever back, and upon
acceration, the lever would pop right back into 2WD. When I tried to engage
4LO, the lever wouldnt even go into gear and the lever was unusually hard to
pull back. I thought I was due for a tcase rebuild or something. These
symptoms started about a week or two after I flushed and filled the tcase up
with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Before this, I have always used Amsoil ATF in
the tcase, with zero problems. I didnt attribute the 4WD problems to my use
of Mobil 1, as I just thought ATF must be ATF. On a last ditch effort, I
looked in the owner's manual which can with my truck. It clearly states to
use ATF+3 7176(2.6 pints), and if this isnt available or cant be found, use
Dexron III ATF. I went to my local auto part store, and looked at a quart of
the Mobil 1 ATF I used. The bottle of Mobil 1 ATF only states that it covers
one type of application, GM Dexron III ATF. So I bought 4 quarts of
Valvoline ATF+3, which is 7176 rated. I drained all the Mobil 1 ATF out and
flushed the tcase out with the Valvoline ATF+3. I put the drain plug back in
and filled it up with the Valvoline +3 ATF. I took the truck out and the 4WD
system, 4HI and 4LO, worked flawlessly. Since this occured on a weekend, I
had to wait till Monday to go to my local Amsoil dealer to buy Amsoil ATF,
something I should have done in the first place and never messed around with
Mobil 1.
Read on.....it gets better........

***Here is the catch of Mobil 1 ATF***
"It also can provide good performance in cars originally requiring Ford Type
H (M2C166-H) and CJ (M2C138-CJ) fluids. It is not a substitute for Chrysler
Type 7176 ATF."
I can only say it did not work at all in my truck, and therefore I would
HIGHLY suggest to stay away
from Mobil 1 ATF and using it in your Dakota.
