well after studying the pics on MALDBNSF aka Don Mallett's site of his
homebrew K&N i decided to have a go at building one for my dak (2000 club cab
4x4 4.7l 5speed). first off for the life of me i can't figure out how he
got that thing in their like that. i had three 45' and one 90' in my arsenal
and no combination of these things was getting my filter under that weird
vacuum looking thing that i am surrmizing must be for the cruise control, as
it has a cable back to the throttle linkage. i guess his filter wasn't from
a 98 k&n fipk kit. anyways i ended up using a rubber adapter for joining 2
pieces of 3 inch abs pipe together to mate to the tb. i then joined this to
a 3 inch pvc 90 degree and glued it to a 11 3/4 inch long piece of three
inch(anyone need a piece of three inch pvc 9foot 1/4inch long?) and ran it
into a 3 inch 45 degree. to this i glued a nifty unit for going from 4 inch
abs to three inch pvc(god bless Home Depot) and attached my old K&N filter
from my 98 fipk. while i had everything apart i followed Don's example and
wrapped all my ac lines with the insulation that i bought for my homebrew. i
had to fab up a bracket to hold the whole thing up in the air. i attached it
to the passenger side mounting point for that huge black square that sat in
front of the tb. all that is in the black square is a 90 degree bend but if
you jam your hand in it is has this weird chamber right before it goes in to
the tb that heads towards the front of the truck. it must be some sort of
resonator or something.
anyways i took it for my first honk tonight as soon as it was done and
after i reset the computer. the sound is nuts. howling rage. acceleration
is up bottom end might be a little down but i am getting more speed in each
gear. i used to redline second at 70 kph(45mph) and now it hits 80kph(50
mph) at redline. all in all i am happy with it. seems to work well with the
3 inch gibson catback i put in.
thanks alot Don for the idea.
