1996 brought us OBD-II and along with it the downstream O2 sensor.
You can remove the cat, and most of the time it will be OK, but every now
and again, you will get a check engine light. (Depends on your driving
habits also, which will determine how often you set up the proper
conditions to initiate a check of that system.) Even with the check
engine light though, there isn't any performance difference. You can
just reset the computer and wait until the next time the light comes on.
That's what I've been doing so far, but I'm planning to go to aftermarket
EFI so eventually that problem will go away.

A better solution is to purchase an O2 sensor simulator which will
fool the computer into thinking the cat is still in place, thus avoiding
the check engine lights. I noticed that KRC Performance has them.
