Here's an answer from Powermaster for a aftermarket Alternator. (Looks like
a good one too)

Bernd --

Powermaster offers a 170 amp bolt-on upgrade for the '97 Dodge Dakota. This
unit produces 115-120 amps at idle. The only modification we recommend is
to increase the size of the charge wire from the alternator to the battery
[at least 4 AWG]. This unit is available in a natural finish [Part #43311
for $469.28] or a black thermal coat finish [Part #53311 for $502.88].
These units are available directly from Powermaster with an additional
$15.00 shipping/handling charge.

Thank you,
