With a lsd unit already installed, I dunno what the parts would cost for a
locker but with my open diff. it was a hell of a lot less than $1,500 and the
install was a breeze.

It sounds like the clutch packs are burnt and your friend is running metal on
metal which accounts for everything you've said. If he still needs to drive
the rig, I'd get that cover off, clean like there's no tomorrow and replace the
fluid. That way it will still be driveable (a la open diff.) but you'll
minimize the damage from all that metal floating around and around... If he
can, just garage it until you can get the lsd removed --it's toast!

well this aint for my dak but my friend with a 97 Bvan that has a LSD. well
he is now gettin this chatterin noise when he take coners plus we jacked up
rear and the axles dont spin in the same direction and if u hold one tire u
can spin teh other. To add to this we took off the plug and stuck my fnger in
there and it looked like glitter (metal chavings). So now should we go with
takin it to the dealer for $1500 worth of work or get a aftermarket locker
and attemped to do it our selves? or have someone install for us? Pretty much
at a stand still any suggestions appreciated
