I wired it to the Trans fuse as Kevin suggested. It appears that either
his '99 318 is wired differently from mine, or that line to the A/C hot
wire is critical in the setup to have it keyed off the ignition.

I'll be buying a test light along with new crimp connectors probably
tomorrow so I can finish the wiring and find a good fuse to use.
