engine troubles (long)

ive been fighting an engine problem for way too long and have stumped
everyone around here, now lets see what you all can do.

about a year ago i bought a 94 sport cc v6, 5sp, ac, ps. all stock as
far as i could tell.
right off the bat i changed the plugs to champions (i dont know what was
in it before), bwd cap and rotor, bwd wires, pcv valve and a 360 k&n
filter.
about 2 months later i started getting a pop from the engine, almost
like a small backfire, and a rough idle, and poor mileage (12-13.5, with
an occasional 15 once in a while).
i wasnt getting much power, but as it would pop, i could feel a pull
from the engine, so i figure the timing is off, or the plug is corroded
or some such, but to no avail. timing was fine, plugs good, etc.
as winter goes on the popping gets less, but no power return, not that i
can tell anyway.
in the spring the popping comes back for a little while then goes away
for the most part. only very occasional popping.
i changed the o2 sensor in about feb, and it ran better for a little
while but not the fix i needed.
my brother-in-law works for a goodyear place here and checked it out on
the scanner they had but said he could see anything wrong.
i changed to autolite 3924s and i could tell a big difference from the
champs (chumps?). i also had to change a couple of the wires because i
yanked out the terminal, but they are the same wires that i already had.

still not the power i should have.
about 2 months ago i changed the timing chain, water pump, and fuel
pump.
the chain had quite a bit of slack in it, but that didnt seem to make
any difference as to how it ran. neither did the fuel pump.

the other day i checked the compression of all the cylinders. i have a
magnum engine book and in the spec pages it says the cylinder head
compression pressure should be 100psi, but the readings i got were way
higher.
    1 160 2 158
    3 160 4 155
    5 170 6 172

i didnt notice any loss of pressure after it stopped cranking .

is the book accurate on this or is that pressure reading not the same as
the one i did?
when i checked the plugs, 1-4 had a slight orange color to them but the
electrode end looked clean and they were all gapped at .040.
nos. 5 and 6 had kind of a carbon and maybe a little oil build up on
them. although i have never noticed any oil disappearing from the
engine, so i dont really think it is burning.

i noticed a discrepancy in the gap specs, the mopar book says gap at
.040, and the part books at the shops, and my chilton say gap at .035, i
dont recall what it says under the hood.
i know a number of you run hotter coils and other ignition packs, but
does anybody know what the stock should be?
i would like to get a hotter coil sometime once i get this problem
fixed, so i know ill need to open it up some anyway.

i also took off the throttle body and cleaned it really good. i looked
into the intake and noticed a black film on the inside, the same as on
the tb, so i assume it should clean up well if i take it off and do it.

the engine has about 137k on it now, ive put on about 10k since ive had
it, and the plugs have about 4-5k on them so they should still be good
for a while. i did clean them up before putting them back in though.

it still has the rough idle and bogs a lot when i run the ac, it even
died a few times with the ac on.
i almost always run the amoco 93 octane gas, as i have had good luck
with it on past vehicles.
last oil change was about 3 weeks ago and i put in castrol conv/synth
blend but will probably go to mobil 1 synth next. i noticed that it
seems to be a popular choice.
not that the oil is gonna cause all this but i did want to try to
include everything i could to help you help me.

i would love to rebuild the engine sometime, but dont have the cash to
do so now.
i am no mechanic, but i have enough help that i could get it done right,
so some day...

anybody have any ideas?

stumped and getting real tired of the crappy mileage.
(i could have done some real mods with the money i would have saved in
gas.)
