The truth is always stranger than fiction. What a discovery today, I'm
always learning new things about my Dak. I now know that originally at the
factory, this Dak was a gleam in some engineer's eye but that's where the
similarity between it and other Dak's end. This engineer had envisioned my
Dak to be a 4.7 automatic but somewhere down the assembly line someone
dropped a 5.9 in it by mistake. When they did that they left the TCM in it.
I had always thought that all the 2000 Dakota's switched to use TCM's so the
PCM wouldn't have to do as much work. I didn't realize the TCM is only for
4.7 engines with the 45RFE transmission. So all you folks with a 2000
Dakota with other than a 4.7, go out and look at the right side of the Dak
engine compartment. Up at the front by the headlight. Is there a big
silver box about 5" X 7" with a 60-pin male connector on it and no cable
connected to it? That's a $400 TCM that wasn't needed for your
configuration. I'm actually not sure that mine wasn't a fluke. So, check
it out and reply.
