I'm new to the list and I'd like to find out anything I can about getting a
4 degree retard in the Mopar Performance PCM. My '93 5.2 Dak is highly
modified and does have a boarderline detonation problem even with high test.
My truck loves the higher RPMs of the MP PCM but due to all the mods pings a
bit when OD kicks in.

Flashing of the PCM is done by people who have the tools that are able to
change the "program" in your PCM. Those people are usually dealers. There
are a handful of performance tuners outside of dealerships that have that
capability as well. Good question on why someone would want a 4-degree
retard, perhaps someone wants to use 87 octane fuel only and the light loads
they carry cause pinging. One way to continue using the lower octane fuel
would be to retard the timing. In the archives for this month are numerous
remedies that have been tried by the folks on this list. Some or a
combination of these have worked. Not all solutions work for Daks. Oh, the
reason why this started to begin with is because of pinging problems. Some
pinging problems may be a sign of a more serious problem, e.g., a bad belly
pan gasket, so all things need to be checked.

Thanks for all the previous info on plug wire heat shield sleeves and plugs
etc. guys. Another question, could some please explain to me what this
"flash" is referring to, who does it, how is it done, and why? Why would
you want a 4 degree timing retard? Any info would be greatly appreciated as
I'm relatively new to "computer controlled vehicles".

Thanks
Jay
