Re: Need information on 4.7 Thermostat

Someone ought to add the 4.7 t-stat swap to the DML page covering the 318
swap, since it's totally different. The 180 upgrade on the 4.7 is a cinch,
but I wanted to add one thing to Bill's instructions. The gasket, block,
and thermostat are all keyed so that the check valve has to be near the top.
Rather than drilling of filing a notch to modify the t-stat, I rolled the
gasket inside-out and cut out the little keyed feature from it with a razor
blade. The whole endeavor only took 20 minutes, though I forgot to refill
the coolant hose (just filled the reservoir) which was bad news. By the
time I got to Pep Boys to pick up more antifreeze, the gauge was just past
the safe high mark and the little 'check gauges' light came on. I'll never
forget that again, though.

BTW, Commerce was cool and all, but $20, jeez. I couldn't find any DMLers
today - maybe next time. The track's open on Friday nights and Saturdays
through Nov. 11, if anyone wants to get together and swap notes sometime.

Stay with the 180. 160 too cold. Step 1> (2) 8mm. bolts. Drain plug is
8mm allen wrench on housing opposite the hose flange. (Prepare for an
anti-freeze bath) Pull hose toward radiator and pull out the thermostat.
Tight working quarters in there. I got 1 bolt from top and 1 from bottom.
USE OLD GASKET. It is real soft rubber.
IMPORTANT>> You will have to file a notch in the outside edge of the new
thermostat. See the old one for an example. There is a notch on the inside
groove of the gasket also a tit on the outside lip of the gasket(cut it
off).
Now drill a tiny hole 1/32" in the flange of the thermostat. You will see
where the check ball is on the factory t'stat, this lets the air out when
you
start up. Put this hole up. Make sure you install the t'stat with the copper
bulb facing the Block and not in the hose flange.
