That's my understanding as well. 46RE from A518 from 727. 42RE and 44RE
from A500 from 904. The second digit represents a rating system for
withstanding torque (higher digit = withstands higher torque).

I also thought that the 46RE came only on the R/T (?).

I was also told and shown by Pat Storey (owner of SMR Transmissions and Torque
Converters and hemi-Dak owner/driver) that you could tell by the shape
of the tranny pans ... the A518 pan bulged out quite a bit at on of the
corners
and along part of the edge of the pan whereas the A500 had no bulge and was
pretty well straight side). I don't know if this was carried over to the
42/44RE
and 46RE though.

Anyone add to and/or correct any of the above?
