Bill Kuhlmann, who suffered smoke inhalation and burns during a major
explosion and fire at Virginia Motorsports Park October 8th, is making a
quick recovery in the burn unit at the Medical College of Virginia in
Richmond.

Kuhlmann, who clinched the 2000 Super Chevy Nitro Coupe championship in
September and holds both ends of the doorslammer records, will be moved from
the burn center’s intensive care unit to a private room early this week, and
may be released from the hospital by the weekend, according to crew member
Vicky Shiels.

The legendary drag racer, who was the first to break the 200 mph barrier in
a full-bodied car, has 2nd degree burns around his eyes and flash burns to
his corneas. He also developed pneumonia after the incident. He is in stable
condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

“He’s awake, alert, and ready to get out of here,” said Shiels.

Kuhlmann has received cards and e-mails from fans throughout the country
since the accident, and said briefly that the support has meant a lot. “I
want to thank everyone who’s sent a note or prayed for my recovery,” Bill
said.
