Before everyone runs down to their dealer for a new clutch fan, let's
clarify a couple things. The fact that your fan comes on in the morning is
not indicative of a bad clutch fan. The reason that happens is because when
you shut your truck off the night before ambient temperatures under your
hood got pretty warm thereby setting the fan switch on and also proving that
your fan is in good condition. The reason it's not going on during normal
driving is because those temperatures under the hood aren't warm enough and
the engine temperature does not increase enough to warrant it. That could
be because your A/C is on and the electric fan is keeping things cool
enough.
If your clutch fan never goes on, I would be more suspect of a faulty device
but even then it could just be the temps are normal and there is no need for
it.

Not to be ignorant or anything but is the clutch fan the source of the
roar I get in the morning when taking off cold? Once the Dakota gets warm
it doesn't have that roar. I thought the tranny was refusing to shift.
