Jason, a couple things people have done to alleviate the V6 ping
issue is to install autolite plugs #3923, and to install a 180 degree
thermostat.
My 97 V6 had a case of the pings, and considering I had nearly 60k miles
on the factory tuneup, it was overdue... I installed the new plugs
and cooler thermostat, and the ping went away for the most part. It will
still ping slightly under very hard acceleration, but not nearly as bad
as it did before.
Hope this helps.
