Air resistance and drag do not increase linearly with speed. It's one
of them big fancy mathematical relationships I've forgotten since Calc
II (exponential? polynomial? multiplicative? geometric?).

Basically, your air resistance and drag don't double between 35 MPH and
70 MPH - it's actually far, far bigger a difference.

Also, what was the terrain like? Obviously, uphill will get you lesser
mileage than downhill.
