Nope, you can get the codes anytime. Some codes do not trigger the
check engine light (MIL). For example, code 12 is stored if the
battery power was disconnected within the last 50 "key on" cycles, but
there's no need to light the MIL since there's no malfunction. There are
other codes which can be stored but which do not trigger the MIL either.
Even if there are no codes stored, you will still get a code 55, which
just means the computer is done spitting codes out at you.
Give it a try, and see what it spits out. :-) (Then go to
