getting engine codes

Noticed today a lot were talking about engine codes and how to retrieve them
(ignition on off etc.). This only works if the "check engine" light comes
on, am I correct? Hey I don't know, I have never had this light come on
before. Curious, just thought I'd ask so that I will know if and when it
happens.
