DETROIT -- Ford is recalling 432,000 1994 through 2001 model
year Mustangs with manual transmissions because of a problem
that could allow the parking brake to slip, allowing the car
to move. Ford spokesman Mike Vaughn said the National High-
way Traffic Safety Administration had received 300 reports
of the parking brake slipping but said no accidents or injur-
ies had been blamed on the problem. The automaker will repair
all Mustangs on dealer lots and mail letters to Mustang owners
at the end of November and in early December notifying them of
the recall. Ford dealers will install a new locking plate on
the affected cars at no cost to the owners. In the meantime,
Vaughn said, drivers should do what the owner's manual advises
-- engage the hand brake and put the car in first gear when
the vehicle is parked.
Last Friday, Ford announced a recall of more than 709,000 full-sized
F-Series pickup trucks because of a possible fuel line leak. All of the F-150
and F-250 pickups
being recalled were sold in the United States.
