Our "hero" for this evening is a Dak 2K QC 4x4 (SLT+, 5.9/auto, NV242,
3.92 LSD, 6180 miles, bone stock).
OK, first the "spankee" story...
Some guy in a Celica something-or-other (it had that semi-circle wing
on it) decides to race me at the light so he can cut me off before getting
cut off himself by an off-ramp. Me, I'm snoozing, but hey no excuses.
He launches pretty hard when the light changes, at which point I go
*snooooze snort huh whazzat?* and decide to mash the loud pedal
just to see what happens. By the time I wake up he has a car length
on me. I see his car hunker down on the 2-3 shift, but it's not helping
him much, as he isn't gaining on me any more. I see him do one of
those "what, that big honkin' slug is _still_ in my blind spot?" looks
in the mirror, at which point he realizes that he's going to have to
earn his Killer Rice Boy badge for the day and he starts inching
away a little. By this time the soccer-mom shift in my transmission
(can you say *weak*?) lets me down (again), so I let off the pedal
and he scoots in where he wants to be. Oh well, that's what I get for
being asleep at the wheel and driving around with O/D engaged ;-).
On the "spanker" side, I'm at the next light down the road. By this
time, Captain Celica has turned off, so I don't get a chance to redeem
myself. I get up to the front of the light, and to my left is some dude
in a white Suburban (looked to be a '99 or so). Again, I'm not racing
(especially not a Suburban, there's nothing to prove there). The light
turns green, I mosey on out into the intersection and head down the
road. I usually start out with the pedal about a third of the way down
or so... not that Suburban, though. I hear his engine let out a growl,
so I know he's getting on it. I'm not in the mood, though, so I just
keep on doing what I'm doing. I keep hearing that growl though, so
I look to my left and there's Mister Suburban, all concentration and
determination, trying to pass me. I let out a chuckle, and just keep
the pedal where it is to see if the torque and gearing does its job.
Sure enough, I pull away from him quite easily at part throttle while
he's doing all he can to make that white elephant get down the road!
Needless to say he wasn't all that thrilled. He finally signalled and
pulled in behind me, having had enough man-beating for one day.
It's pretty obvious that my truck could benefit from the standard
things that I see done on this list (intake, throttle body, exhaust).
Judging from the way the transmission reacted in the first story,
I'm betting a shift kit couldn't hurt either. And 3923's, of course.
All the same, a stock QC 4x4 with a 360 in it is nothing to sneeze
at - I really love my truck!
Have fun,
-- JB
