DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 876,000 1995-1997 Explorer
and Mercury Mountaineer sport-utility vehicles to replace a faulty
front suspension sway bar that may corrode and break. The National
Highway Transportation Safety Administration began a preliminary
investigation of reports of broken suspension parts on the vehicles
in mid-September, after a NHTSA employee had trouble turning his
Explorer and discovered a broken sway bar link. Ford has received
262 reports of the problem and two reports of minor accidents
attributed to a broken sway bar link, which can cause the vehicle
to lean while turning. No deaths or injuries have been linked to
the sway bar problem, which was blamed on cold weather and cor-
rosion.
