The Daily Auto Insider
Chrysler Rescue Means Restructuring

The German financial magazine Capital reports that DaimlerChrysler's
Chrysler rescue strategy entails a streamlined group structure and platform,
and part sharing plans for its brands. Tthe company's restructuring plan
would save billions. According to the magazine, the company would keep
Chrysler for compact cars but only as a label. The brands would cooperate on
development and production and lose their independence for the first time.

The Mercedes M-Class and Chrysler Jeep Cherokee would share a platform, and
Mitsubishi sport-utility vehicles would also be integrated. The article
provided no details on how Mitsubishi's SUVs would be melded with the
M-Class and Chrysler Jeep Cherokee.

Under a restructuring plan that must be approved by the supervisory board in
February, there would be four divisions. Those include a luxury division for
Mercedes-Benz; a compact and small-car division for Chrysler, Mitsubishi and
Smart; a SUV and minivan division for Chrysler, Mitsubishi and the Mercedes
M-Class; and a commercial division. A member of the management board would
head each division.

The company's restructuring would also streamline its distribution
structure, Capital reported. It would distribute Mercedes-Benz, Smart,
Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai under a common distribution and services
organization according to the company's head of distribution in Germany,
Eckhard Panka.
