The decals on our trucks appear to be what we in the sign business call
vinyl's (3M being the primary manufacture, although there are others ).
When we remove them from signs (and want to protect the painted surface) we
have a number of methods:
Heat: Use a hair dryer to soften the copy. Problem is not to soften the
paint. Not necessarily the best method.
Alcohol: The Art Director (also the guy who applies the vinyl's) will use
rubbing alcohol, working it under the edge of the copy and pealing the
decal back then working in more alcohol. Slow process.
Orange Peel: This is a citrus based product that is available at any
vinyl/sign supply company. It softens the copy (makes it look like an
orange peel) then you can easily remove. We don't have any on hand at this
moment, so I can't read the label or give you the manufacturer. Works very
well with a minimum of effort.
As I'm sure you will do, from all I've read you take great care of your
truck, test out any of the above methods on a painted spot that doesn't
show before going at the copy on your truck.
Hope this helps.
