The ridges are for part-throttle fuel economy, they produce a higher vacuum
signal from tip in and help accellerate the air before you go to wide open.
Unfortunately, they also cause a restriction. One of the biggest
improvements is thinning the throttle shaft also. And actually, it makes it
quieter when you remove the ridges.
