There's a bushing on the end of the distributor shaft (inside the engine).
If it wears out (oblong) the timing gets totally out of whack. (There's a
special tool for this which goes down in the block and yanks it out...also
used to install the new one. Can't find a Snap-On truck that carries it
though.)

I had a problem similar to bucking and it turned out to be distributor
related. They didn't replace the whole dist, just some bushing, but I
don't have the repair invoice in front of me.
